Esposito Matches Career High with 16 Saves in Setback vs. #15 Saints

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked St. Lawrence men's lacrosse team closed the game on a 5-0 run and earned a 10-5 victory at Cortland Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons dropped to 1-1 with the loss, while the Saints improved to 2-0.

Sophomore Dante Yacavone (Homer) led the Cortland offense with two goals. Senior Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields), junior Jacob Rivers (Home) and sophomore Troy Morris (Long Beach) each added a goal. Senior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) and junior Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore goalie Marc Esposito (West Babylon) matched his career high with 16 saves for the Red Dragons. Williams won 10-of-18 faceoffs and collected six ground balls. Yacavone, Morris and sophomore Anthony Marcuccilli (Geneva) secured three ground balls apiece.

Junior Peter Koch (Wilton, CT) led St. Lawrence with four goals. Junior Jack Hennessey (Hingham, MA) tallied two goals and two assists, senior Mike Donnelly (Mansfield, MA/New Hampton School) recorded two goals and one assist, and seniors Brian Cunningham (Auburn) and Harrison Koch (Wilton, CT) each netted a goal.

Senior goalie Alex Terry (Hopkinton, MA/New Hampton School) registered 10 saves. Junior Brian Gannon (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) scooped up six ground balls and caused four turnovers. Junior Zach Prime (Duxbury, MA) added six ground balls, and sophomore Joe Scarfi (Wilton, CT) contributed five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. Peter Koch and Hennessey scored less than two minutes apart before Yacavone's first goal at 1:34 made it a 2-1 score. St. Lawrence scored the first three goals of the second quarter to build a 5-1 lead, but Yacavone scored on a diving play just two seconds before the half to pull Cortland to within 5-2.

The Red Dragons netted three quick goals to open the third quarter to even the game at 5-5. Rivers scored just 20 seconds into the quarter, Haggerty notched a man-up goal at 13:34 and Morris scored at 10:53.  Harrison Koch gave the Saints back the lead for good at 8:37 before Donnelly's goal at 4:17 gave St. Lawrence a 7-5 advantage through 45 minutes of play. Peter Koch netted back-to-back goals just over four minutes apart, and Donnelly completed the scoring at 6:20 for the 10-5 final.
