Blue Devils swept by Morrisville State

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State lost to Morrisville State for the second straight night, coming up short 4-3 on Saturday in SUNYAC men's hockey.

Nick DeVito scored a short-handed goal at 13:40 of the third period to break a 3-3 tie. It was DeVito's second goal of the game and his third in the weekend series which included a 4-3 overtime win by the Mustangs (2-0-0 overall, 2-0=0 SUNYAC) on Friday night.

R. Austin Johnson and Jesse Edwards had the other Morrisville State goals while goaltender Jared Young made 40 saves. Three of the saves were sterling glove stops of open Fredonia State shooters.

For the Blue Devils (0-2-0 overall, 0-2-0 SUNYAC), Malcolm Arseneau had two goals and an assist in his first collegiate game. Charlie Manley had a goal and an assist and goaltender Anton Rosen made 25 saves.

The Blue Devils won the battle of the special teams, scoring a pair of power-play goals in three tries and successfully killing off all six Morrisville State power-play chances.

After a scoreless first period, the teams traded goals the rest of the way. Each team scored twice in the second period. DeVito put the Mustangs on top when, as part of a 2-on-1 rush, he patiently held the puck before wiring a shot into the top of the net. Arseneau scored his first collegiate goal with a slapshot from the right point while the Blue Devils were skating with a 4-on-3 man-advantage. Johmson made it 2-1 Morrisville State with a shot through a screen before Manley connected with a slapshot from the point on a power-play.

The three third-period goals were scored 91 seconds apart. Blue Devil defensive lapses led to the two Mustang goals. Edwards walked in alone and scored on a back-hander to make it 3-2 Morrisville State. Arseneau tied the game at 3-3 with a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle directly off the draw from Jasper Korican-Barlay. Fredonia State's momentum was short-lived as DeVito converted a Blue Devil turnover in the neutral zone into a breakaway goal -- the eventual game-winner -- just 43 seconds after Arseneau's goal.

Young earned the first star, DeVito the second, and Arseneau the No. 3 star and the Blue Devil Booster Club Player of the Game.
