Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Bears fall to Mustangs in OT, 3-2

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Morrisville State (6-4, 5-2 SUNYAC) rallied to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-9-1, 1-6-1) 3-2 in overtime on Friday evening. Sophomore forward Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) and freshman defenseman Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) each scored for the Bears.

Potsdam controlled the play early in the first period, jumping on the Mustangs with a power play. Morrisville was able to kill the penalty to stay even. The Bears were called for interference at 15:39 and the Mustangs made them pay. Jestin Somero scored 35 seconds later on the man advantage for a 1-0 lead. Potsdam peppered Morrisville goalie Jared Young with 14 shots in the opening 20 minutes, but trailed by one at the first intermission.

The Bears continued to work as the second period began and were rewarded with a power play after a Mustang hook at 3:12. At the 4:27 mark, sophomore forward Robert Clerc (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) set up McArthur for the power play equalizer. Potsdam didn't let up and generated more opportunities, but didn't score on its second man advantage. At 9:26, Leith gave the Bears the lead with his first collegiate goal on assists from sophomore forward Devin Panzeca (Lake Zurich, Ill./East Coast Wizards) and senior assistant captain Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers). Potsdam was able to sustain pressure with a third power play minutes later, but Young was able to keep his team within one. The Bears outshot Morrisville 23-9 in the middle period and led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The third was the most evenly played period of the contest. The Mustangs killed off another penalty five minutes in and at 10:58, Eric Melso struck to tie the game. Two minutes later, Morrisville was in position to regain the lead with its fourth power play. However, the Bears killed the penalty and regulation ended in a draw.

Two minutes into the extra session, Potsdam was on the defensive again, trying to kill another penalty. Unfortunately, the Mustangs sealed the victory as Ryan Bochert connected for the game-winner on the man advantage with 1:13 remaining.

Sophomore goalie Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche) finished with 22 saves, while Young earned the victory with 45 stops.

The Bears outshot Morrisville 47-25. The Mustangs were 2-for-5 on the power play and Potsdam was 1-for-5.

The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
