Brockport Drops a Close One to Wooster in Mauro Panaggio Tournament Championship

Daytona Beach, FL – The College at Brockport men's basketball team took on the Fighting Scots of Wooster on Monday in the championship game of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament. Brockport came up short, falling 94-90, finishing second at the tournament.

Following the final buzzer the All-Tournament team was announced, as Justin Summers received recognition. Summers averaged 25 points and eight rebounds a game, while shooting 70% from the field in the tournament. He is the only player in the history of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament to make the All-Tournament Team three times.

Jahidi Wallace also was named to the All-Tournament Team for his play throughout the event. Wallace averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds on 57.9% shooting from the floor down at the tournament.

Justin Summers went 9-for-13 from the floor on his way to a team-high 24 points in the contest. Jahidi Wallace was second in scoring with 14 points and added four boards.

Tyler Collins added 13 points and five assists, while Davonte Jones put up a season-high 11 points, four assists off the bench. Devante Hagins did a little of everything in the game with nine points, six boards, four assists, and three steals.

It was a close game right from the start, with neither team holding a double-digit lead at any point in the contest. Wooster worked to gain a six point edge with 12:01 left in the first half, but the lead would not be there for long. After a 10-0 scoring run late in the first, Brockport seized a seven-point advantage to take its largest lead of the period. The Fighting Scots closed the gap before heading to the locker rooms, as the Green and Gold led 45-43 at the break.

The second half featured 11 lead changes and five ties on the scoreboard. The teams traded blows back and forth until the Golden Eagles stretched out an eight-point lead, the largest of the game, with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. However, Wooster knocked down two quick threes to keep the score tight as the contest was tied at 81 a piece with 2:47 left to play. The Fighting Scots took advantage of their defensive stops and opportunities at the foul line down the stretch to take the 94-90 win.

Wooster was crowned as Champions of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament. Danyon Hempy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, as he put up 32 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks in the championship game. Keonn Scott was named to the All-Tournament Team, finishing with 26 points and six assists on the day.

Brockport is now 6-2 overall on the season, as its six game winning streak has come to an end. The team will look to right the ship following the new year as it will host Alfred University on January 3rd, 2020. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5 pm that Friday.
