A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell to Union College 15-12 on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field. The loss drops the Red Dragons to 1-2 on the season.
The Inside Story
After Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 2:08 of the game, Oneonta responded with a pair of quick goals 47 seconds apart from Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) and Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central). The Dutchmen would take the lead back before Calabrese struck again for Oneonta, knotting the game at 3-3. Calabrese then fed Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) for her fifth goal of the season to give the Red Dragons their only lead of the game. Union responded with back-to-back goals including one with a player advantage to go in front 5-4. With 8:27 remaining in the first half, Oneonta tied the game for the last time on another Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) tally. The Dutchwomen would outscore Oneonta 4-1 for the remainder of the first half to take a 9-6 lead at the break.
After Christen Patalano (Mineola/Kellenberg Memorial) scored on a pass from Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) to open the second half, Union used a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 13-7. Isabella Marx (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) ended the Union run with her first goal of the season. Trailing 15-9, Oneonta went on late run with a pair of goals from Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) and one from Deirdre Buckley (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) to cut the Union lead to 15-12. That would be as close as the Red Dragons would get as the Dutchwomen won the final draw control to preserve the win.
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) led Oneonta with a game-high seven points, netting four goals while dishing out three assists.
Haley Vermette (Brewster/North Salem) caused a team-best four turnovers while
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) and
Francesca Lawless (Massapequa/Massapequa) each gather four ground balls. Union outshot Oneonta by a slim 31-29 margin as
