There were some voters that thought John Carroll, on the heels of an Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship run a year ago, deserved to be in the d3hoops.com top 25 poll.
Just not enough of the voters saw John Carroll that way. The Blue Streaks received 25 points which was the 33rd highest total of the teams that were voted upon.
Tonight's 72-39 demolition of Fredonia State may have voters rethinking the future of the 2019-2020 Blue Streaks.
The fact that head coach
Kelly Morrone could lament the
missed opportunities in a 33-point win can speak to the dominance of this victory.
John Carroll's 65 rebounds were six short of the schools record (71 vs. Ursuline in 1980), and of that total 32 were offensive rebounds because the Blue Streaks missed a number of lay-ups that could have produced an even higher offensive output.
Still, John Carroll scored the first seven points of the game and led 18-4 toward the end of the first quarter.Â
Fredonia State briefly got the lead down to nine points early in the second period, but a 17-1 run during the quarter by the Blue Streaks all but sealed the win.
A lay-up byÂ
Gabrielle Gevaudan at the 7:32 mark enabled the Blue and Gold to achieve its largest margin of advantage in the game, 53-17.
The Blue Devils never got closer than 24 points the rest of the way.
John Carroll (1-0) was led by a pair of double doubles from
Olivia Nagy (18 points, 14 rebounds) and d3hoops.com preseason All-American
Nicole Heffington (14 points, 10 rebounds).
A total of 11 Blue Streaks got into the scorebook this evening.
Fredonia State (0-1) was led by nine points from Morgan Davis.
JCU will face La Roche (0-2) Saturday at 3:00 pm in the second game of the JCU Tip-Off Tournament
