Men’s Basketball drops season opener to Nazareth, 78-69

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Kay Grant (Jamaica/Thomas Jefferson) finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, but it was not enough for Buffalo State in its season opener as the Bengals fell tonight to visiting Nazareth, 78-69.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sheldon Adams (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) was the second-leading scorer for the Bengals with 12 points, but was just 3 of 19 from the field.  He added seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman Aaron Davis (Beacon/Beacon) added 11 points and two assists, and Delen Ramovic (Brooklyn/Midwood) also netted 11 points.
  • Buffalo State jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Golden Flyers used a 10-0 run late in the first half to take a 44-32 lead into the intermission and never trailed again.
  • The Bengals cut the deficit to seven several times and finally cut it to six at 73-67 with less than three minutes remaining, but never got any closer.
  • Nazareth forced 16 Buffalo State turnovers in the game and held a 34-22 scoring advantage in the paint.
  • The Golden Flyers also had a 52-22 advantage in points off the bench.
  • Both teams shot 39 percent from the floor for the game.  Nazareth was 21 of 33 (64%) from the free-throw line, while the Bengals were 17 of 23 (74%).
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Kevin Underwood led Nazareth with 16 points. 
  • Jonathan Park had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Cody Green scored 12 points, and Stephen Gabel netted 10.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will host the annual Coles Classic starting next Friday when it opens against Medaille at 8 p.m.
