Big night from Smith & Bryan leads Devils

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team ran its record to 3-1 with a strong second half in a 77-64 road win over Waynesburg on Tuesday. Dydy Bryan and De'Quan Smith both had hot hands -- each scoring 24 points -- on a combined 15-of-26 shooting. They connected on 9-of-11 shots from beyond the arc.

Bryan continued to be a big addition for the Devils in his first season with the team. He shot 8-of-12 from the floor, and four-of-five from the line, while adding team highs with five assists and three steals.

Smith was 7-of-14 from the field, and five-of-six from both the free-throw line and beyond the arc. He scored 22 points in the second half.

Moussa Samassa added 10 points and Adam Braniecki had seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

The two squads played to a 28-all tie at the break.

After both teams traded a pair of layups to start the second half, Smith nailed three straight three-pointers. After a pair of free throws by Waynesburg, Smith converted a layup, then Bryan scored on a layup and a three-pointer on the next two possessions to put Fredonia State up 46-32 to complete an 18-4 run.

Waynesburg pulled within eight points three different times in the second half, but failed to make a serious run.

Fredonia State held a 30-25 advantage on the boards, and shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field, and 55 percent (12-of-22) from three-point range. Waynesburg hit 40 percent of its shots from both the floor and long range.

Waynesburg (0-3) was led by Brennan Smith's 20 points, one of four Yellow Jackets in double digits.

The Devils head to Pitt-Bradford on Friday.
