Women's Lacrosse Falls in Spring Break Match-Up With Oneonta

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team completed their spring break games with another tough component, the Oneonta Red Dragons. Oneonta is a part of the SUNYAC conference on the East coast of the United States. Ultimately the Eagles fell 20-2 against a talented and veteran team.

The meet up between these two teams is the first in program history. Both coaches are beginning their second years of head coach leadership.

The Red Dragons returned a strong nucleus of experienced players while welcoming a talented group of newcomers in their 2020 season. Oneonta is coming off a 9-9 season (2019) that saw them finish 5-4 in the SUNYAC while qualifying for the conference tournament.  Second-year Head Coach Brandi Lusk is confident that her squad can compete for the top spot in the SUNYAC.

Oneonta got an early lead in the game and would score 15 goals in the first half. The Eagles continued to compete, show grit and did not give up. With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) would score the first goal for the Eagles. She would net a second with 10:52 left on the clock.

UNW defense would hold the Red Dragons to just five goals in the second half. Northwestern goalie, Kayleah Stephan (St. Croix Falls, Wis./Chisago Lakes Baptist), would secure five saves. Senior Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) finished the contest with two goals, two points and five shots.

The Eagles next home game will be held March 17 as they host the Hamline Pipers for a 7pm face off.
