Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Convincing Win Over Oneonta Keeps Brockport Undefeated at Home

Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport men's basketball team handed Oneonta its first conference loss of the season in convincing fashion on Friday night. Brockport defeated its SUNYAC opponent, 81-61, making it three wins in a row.

Danny Ashley put up a season-high 15 points and had six assists to lead the Green and Gold offense, as the team improves to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC. Antonio Alvarez was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field with three shots from distance, putting up 11 points off the bench.

Monte Stroman continues to raise the bar on his play, setting a new career-high for the third straight game in a third different statistical category. Stroman finished with 13 points and grabbed a career-best seven rebounds in the game. Tyree Grimsley and Devante Hagins both tallied nine points and nine boards, as the Golden Eagles stay undefeated at 6-0 on their home court.

Oneonta started the game well holding an early 5-0 lead, but that didn't last long. Brockport quickly captured the lead by the 17:22 mark in the first half and kept a lead for the remainder of the contest. Back-to-back finishes at the rim by Tyree Grimsley gave the home team a 10-point edge just before the halfway point of the first. Danny Ashley hit a jumper before the halftime buzzer, maintaining the team's double-digit lead at the half.

Winning the turnover battle was huge in the opening half of play, as Brockport had six less giveaways than the visiting Red Dragons. It was a team effort to score the ball early on, as five different players had five or more points at the mid-game break.

Kevin Mackin from Oneonta sparked a quick 6-0 run to start the second half, cutting the Brockport lead to just four points. However, once again the Golden Eagles would have an answer as they quickly got the lead back to double-digits after a timeout.

Five three-pointers in a span of just two minutes, courtesy of Danny Ashley, Monte Stroman, and Antonio Alvarez, extended the team's lead to 23 points with 12:41 on the clock. Brockport would go up by as much as 26 points, as it cruised to a blowout win at home.

The Green and Gold outrebounded Oneonta, 51-41, in the contest and kept the visitors to just 32.8% shooting from the floor. The team crashed the glass hard on the night, turning 13 offensive rebounds into 21 second chance points.

Giving the Red Dragons their first conference loss of the year, Brockport is now tied with Potsdam at 5-1 in-conference for the top spot in the SUNYAC standings.

The Golden Eagles are back to work Saturday afternoon with another home game against New Paltz. This SUNYAC battle is set to tip-off at 4 pm.
