Game Recap: Softball |

Cortland Loses Pair of One-Run Games vs. Geneseo in Battle of SUNYAC Leaders

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Taylor Fedor doubled home the game's lone run in the sixth inning of the opener and Alyssa Persich went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer in the second game as Geneseo earned a pair of one-run victories over host Cortland, 1-0 and 4-3, in SUNYAC softball action.

Geneseo (21-5, 10-2 SUNYAC)) takes over sole possession of the SUNYAC lead with the wins, two games ahead of Cortland (15-16, 8-4 SUNYAC), Buffalo State (8-4 SUNYAC) and Oneonta (8-4 SUNYAC). Cortland will host Plattsburgh in a league doubleheader Monday at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the regular season next weekend at Buffalo State and Fredonia.

Geneseo 1, Cortland 0

Cortland starter Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) and Geneseo starter Taylor Moore each tossed five scoreless innings before Geneseo broke through in the sixth. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Fedor hit a double just over the bag at third that scored pinch runner Kate Luchowski from first base.

Cortland had runners reach scoring position in each of the first four innings, but managed only one runner, on a two-out single by Taylor Felicello (Marlboro), over the final three innings.

Moore, now 9-2, finished with a five-hit shutout with one walk and one strikeout. Van Dorn allowed seven runs and one hit in six and a third innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Cady Walts (Cortland) retired both batters she faced in the seventh, one by strikeout.

Maddison Tucker went 2-for-3 as part of Geneseo's seven-hit attack. Felicello was 2-for-3 for Cortland.

Geneseo 4, Cortland 3

Cortland staked itself to an early 2-0 lead through two innings. Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) hit her first career homer to lead off the bottom of the first, and she singled in a run with two outs in the second after a Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) one-out infield single and a Jessica Marsh (Wynantskill/Troy) walk.

Persich's two-run homer to left tied the game in the third. The Knights took the lead in the fifth on singles by Brooke Wolfe and Persich and a Tucker sacrifice fly, and added a run on Danni Napoli's RBI infield single.

Cortland cut its deficit to 4-3 on Skyler Hoyt's (Endicott/Union-Endicott) solo homer to left in the bottom of the fifth. The Red Dragons put two runners on in the seventh with two outs on a Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) single and a Felicello walk before a groundout ended the game.

Ashlyn Kersch earned the win for the Knights to run her record to 8-1. She scattered nine hits, walked three and struck out six. Courtney Kane (Bellport) pitched all but a third of an inning for the Red Dragons and gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Hoyt finished 3-for-4 with a homer, double and RBI, Scharff was 2-for-3, and Schoonmaker went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI for Cortland. In addition to Persich's four-hit effort, Wolff was 2-for-3 with two runs and Anna Merante went 2-for-4 for Geneseo.
