Pascarella perfect in 2-0 win over Canton

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State sophomore goaltender Ryan Pascarella stopped all 25 shots he faced Saturday in the Blue Devils' 2-0 win over the SUNY Canton Kangaroos.

Jacob Haynes and Jasper Korican-Barlay each had a goal and an assist for the Blue Devils, who improved to 3-8-4 and ended a streak of four straight games without a win. One of those losses came Friday to the Kangaroos, 3-2.

A walk-on as a freshman, Pascarella was making just his fourth appearance in goal and his second start -- all this season -- in place of injured starter Anton Rosen. Pascarella's exploits Saturday earned him the game's No. 1 star and the Fredonia State Booster Club Player of the Game award.

Korican-Barlay, who had two assists on Friday, was the No. 2 star and Haynes was No. 3.

Pascarella's biggest save came with 16:56 left in the third period when he sprawled to deny Canton's Noah Robinson, who was open in the slot after taking a pass from a teammate. Pascarella was shaken up on the play but remained in the game. The shutout lowered his goals-against average to 1.26, albeit in just 142 minutes of playing time.

Both Fredonia State goals came on power plays. Haynes opened the scoring, his sixth goal of the season, when he deflected a shot from the point by Craig McCabe at 18:54 of the first period. Korican-Barlay's goal, his third, came at 16:49 of the second period when he scooped in a short goal-mouth pass from Ethan Kirbis.

In addition to the stellar play by Pascarella, the Blue Devils played solid defense in front of him while creating scoring chances. They blocked 13 shots as a team, with 10 players have at least one, and McCabe, Hugo Gamache, and Tyler Riter having two each. Fredonia State was also five for five on the penalty kill and outshot the Kangaroos, 40-25.

Canton goaltender Michael Cerasuolo was credited with 38 saves. The Kangaroos, who received votes in the latest USCHO.com NCAA Division III rankings, fell to 9-4-2.

Fredonia State closes out the non-league portion of the regular season with a pair of games next weekend at Stevenson.
