The Inside Story
The Red Dragons and Alvernia each led by as much as seven in the first half of their game. With Alvernia leading 27-20, the Red Dragons began to chip away when

Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) for the fast-break layup.
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) followed with a three pointer to pull Oneonta within two. After Alvernia's Justin Thomas gave the Golden Wolves a four point lead with a layup,
Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) nailed a three to Oneonta in to the break with a one point deficit.
Â
The two teams went back and forth in the second half. Alvernia took a seven-point lead with 8:55 remaining in regulation, only to see the Red Dragons battle their way back into the game. With the game knotted at 56-56,
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) gave Oneonta their first lead since the 18:45 mark of the second half. Tailing 61-60, back-to-back three's by
Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah) and
Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) gave the Red Dragons a 66-61 advantage with 2:04 remaining. After the two teams exchanged a pair of free-throws, Alvernia's Justin Thomas nailed a jumper and a three-pointer to knot the game at 68-68 with 36 seconds remaining. After a timeout by Oneonta,
Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah) scored on a layup to put the hosts in front 70-68. As time was ticking down, Mailk Green nailed a second chance three pointer to put Alvernia in front 71-70 with a second left on the clock.
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) had a great look down the other end to win the game, but the ball rattled out of the rim as Alvernia held on for the victory.
Â
In the consolation game, the Red Dragons came out firing, taking leads as big as 13 in the first half. Leading 37-30 at the break, Oneonta was able to extend their advantage to ten before Wesley came soaring back. Wesley used an 11-0 run to take a 46-45 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation. An
Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) layup and a free-throw gave Oneonta a two-point advantage with 12:40 left on the clock. That would be the last time Oneonta would lead as Wesley went on an 18-5 run and never looked back.
