EWING, N.J. — Plattsburgh State suffered an 8-2 setback to The College of New Jersey in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at George Ackerman Park.
Plattsburgh State (0-3) is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Farmingdale State College tomorrow at 12 p.m. TCNJ (1-4) hosts Gwynedd Mercy on Monday at 3 p.m.
TCNJ took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single up the middle off the bat of Gary Otten. The Lions scored another run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead on a single by Nick Francisco to left-center field.
Plattsburgh State got on the scoreboard in the third inning. With the bases loaded, senior catcher Santino Ycaza (Mastic, N.Y./Brentwood Sonderling) was hit by a pitch, which brought home junior right fielder Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) from third base to make the score 3-1.
However, TCNJ would respond with three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh inning to put Plattsburgh State down 8-1.
In the fifth inning, TCNJ's David Cardona III drove in two runs with a double to left-center field and Cardona later scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-1.
In the seventh inning, TCNJ's Joe Oczkowski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and Grant Sible brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 8-1.
The Cardinals scored their second run of the day when freshman right fielder Cody Peryea (Altona, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of freshman left fielder Daniel Cardito (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) in the eighth inning. However, Plattsburgh State was unable to get any closer and the game ended with the score 8-2 in favor of TCNJ.
Junior right-hander Chase Blazak (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) (0-1) started the game for Plattsburgh State. Blazak allowed six runs — five earned — on nine hits over four innings. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.
Sophomore right-handed and left-handed pitcher David Ghiloni (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) pitched one hitless inning in relief.
Freshman right-hander Gabe Mounkhall (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) allowed two earned runs on one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked one.
Sophomore right-hander Pierce Steinberg (Mahopac, N.Y./The Harvey School) pitched 2/3 of an inning. He limited the Lions to one hit.
Freshman right-hander Christian Ott (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) pitched a 1-2-3 inning in relief.
TCNJ held an 11-6 advantage in hits. The Lions committed the only error of the game.
