Baseball opens southern trip with split

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split their doubleheader Monday afternoon to open their spring trip in Florida. The Red Dragons defeated Vassar College 10-1 to start the day before falling to Wells 1-0 in the nightcap. The split moves the Oneonta record to 2-3 on the year.

The Inside Story
Against Vassar, the Red Dragons got six strong innings from Steven Gerringer (LaGrangeville/Arlington) as the senior allowed just two hits while striking out three Brewers to earn the win.

The Red Dragons jumped on the board in the top of the second on a Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) RBI ground out, scoring Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) from third. Oneonta broke the game open with four runs in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, James Zupo (Massapequa/Massapequa) plated a pair of runs with a single through the left side, scoring Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East). Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) capped off the inning with a two-run single to left field, upping the Oneonta lead to 5-0.

Oneonta put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth with three more runs. Ryan McGrane (Plainedge/Plainedge) drove in two of the runs with a single to left, scoring Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) and Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) to make it 7-0. A miscue by the Vassar defense allowed the Red Dragons increase their lead to 8-0.

After Vassar plated a run in the bottom fifth, the Red Dragons ended the Brewers comeback hopes by putting two more on the board in the top of the sixth.

Against Wells, the Red Dragons could only muster five hits in the 1-0 setback to the Express. Oneonta had their chances in the game but left eight men on base for the game. The Red Dragons pitching staff only surrendered two hits in the game while striking out ten.

Just the stats.
Ryan McGrane (Plainedge/Plainedge) led the Oneonta offense by going 3-for-6 on the day with three RBI. Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) went 2-for-4 for two runs scored and a pair of RBI against Vassar. Dominica Lamonica also added two hits against Vassar while John Zinko (Wallkill/Wallkill) had two of the Red Dragons five hits against Wells.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action tomorrow, March 10th when they battle Greenville University at 9:30am at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
