Pitching Dominant as Lakers Take a Pair

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Senior pitchers Reston Pettit and Robert Donnelly each pitched seven shutout innings in helping the Oswego State baseball team to a pair of wins on Friday afternoon at Monroe Community College.  The Lakers won the first contest 12-1 in nine innings and the second by a score of 7-0 in the seven-inning affair.  Oswego State improves to 10-5 on the season and 4-1 in the SUNYAC while New Paltz falls to 7-8 and 0-2 in conference action.

Game 1
Oswego took command early in this game with four runs in the second inning.  Myles Kutscher led off the inning with a double and Lukas Olsson followed with an RBI-triple to break open the scoring.  Olsson would come home on a Luke Simmons fielder's choice groundout.  After a Zach Whelan walk, doubles by Brandon Nicholson and Ryan Enos would plate two more runs.

A quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third by Pettit kept momentum with the Lakers and they would add three more runs in the bottom of the frame.  Eli Holton led off with a single and Kutscher was hit by a pitch.  Olsson smacked a double down the left field line to bring in Holton and Simmons followed with an RBI-single to score Kutscher.  With Olsson perched on third, Whelan sacrifice-bunted up the right field line to score the third run of the inning.

The Lakers would add runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to put the game out of reach for the Hawks.

Pettit earned his first win of the season (1-0) while going seven strong innings, allowing no runs, two hits and striking out seven.  He lowered his earned run average to 2.25 on the season and sits second on the team with 19 strikeouts.  Relievers Quinn MacDonald and Mike Disalvo pitched the final two innings and allowed only one hit while striking out four New Paltz batters.

Game 2
The second game was very similar to the first in that Donnelly only allowed a pair of hits in the contest while improving his record to 3-0.  This was his second complete game shutout of the season.  His first was a 9-0 shutout of conference-for Fredonia back on March 16 down in Florida.

Oswego got on the board in the third inning when Nicholson led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Freshman Ryan Enos reached on an error and moved Nicholson to third.  Right fielder Mike Dellicarri plated Nicholson with a single through the right side, but Enos was caught trying to advance to third.  Senior John Barnes hammered a triple to deep center field and then scored on a wild pitch to put Oswego up 3-0.

In the fifth, Enos walked to lead off the inning.  Dellicarri drove a ball to deep right center for a triple that moved Oswego out to 4-0.  Barnes followed with another triple to score Dellicarri before Holton crushed a ball to left center for a two-run homerun to conclude the scoring in the contest.

The baseball team is back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they return back home to take on New Paltz in the final contest of the three-game set.  That game will be played on the Laker Baseball Field.
