Men’s Hockey hampered by slow start in 4-2 loss to Cortland

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State could not overcome a sluggish start and a 2-0 first-period deficit in a 4-2 loss to visiting Cortland tonight at the Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland scored a pair of similar goals in the first period, including the first just 55 seconds into the game, with both goals coming off of backdoor deflections.
  • Buffalo State got on the board with Vadim Vasjonkin's (Tallinn, Estonia) fifth of the season off a feed from Nikita Kozyrev (Tallinn, Estonia) early in the second period.  Zach Remers (Clarence, NY/Canisius) also had an assist.
  • The Red Dragons answered in the middle of the period, converting on a breakaway to reclaim the two-goal edge.
  • Buffalo State dominated the third period, outshooting the Red Dragons 13-3. 
  • Sam Maddox (St. Louis, MO/Lindburgh) tallied his fourth goal of the season with assists from Vasjonkin and Kozyrev with 8:15 remaining but Buffalo State was unable to net the equalizer despite consistent pressure.
  • Cortland completed the scoring with an empty net tally with one second remaining.
  • The Bengals finished with a 33-20 advantage in shots on goal and both teams were 0 for 2 on the power play.
  • Connor Minch (Manchester, NH/Manchester Central) made 17 saves in the loss.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Sean Pericak had a goal and two assists for Cortland.  Alex Storjohann, Dorian Overland and Logan Blaser also scored for the Red Dragons. 
  • Nick Modica finished with 31 saves.
