FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Morrisville State's Eric Melso completed a hat trick with 22 seconds left in overtime to down Fredonia State, 4-3, in the SUNYAC men's hockey season opener at Steele Hall.
Melso scored on a backhander to complete a 3-on-2 rush with Nick DeVito and Ryan Bochert. Melso also scored midway through the first period and midway through the third, the latter forging a 3-3 tie.
DeVito had Morrisville State's other goal. He also had two assists.
Ryan Dunner had two goals for the Blue Devils, who had beaten the Mustangs in the last five meetings dating back to the 2016-17 season.
Tyler Riter also scored for the Blue Devils.
Melso opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 9;44 of the first period before Dunner connected from the right circle on a pass from behind the net by Jake McCabe. Dunner made it 2-1 when he stole the pass on a deep forecheck and buried a wrap-around just 36 seconds into the second period. DeVito's goal at 12:10 of the second period made it 2-2 and came while the Mustangs were short-handed. Riter put the Blue Devils back in front at 6:58 of the third period when he shoveled in a shot from behind the net following a pass from
Tommy Martyn.
Morrisville State's Jared Young made 41 saves while Anton Rosen stopped 28 shots for Fredonia State.
The teams meet again 7 p.m. Saturday at Steele Hall.
