Cortland Squeezes Out Nine-Inning Victory to Earn Split vs. Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Hannah Feldman's (Buffalo/Sweet Home) squeeze bunt drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Cortland defeated Plattsburgh, 4-3, to earn a split of a SUNYAC doubleheader with the Cardinals. Plattsburgh won the opener, 5-1, behind Katie Pitkin's three-hitter.

Cortland is now 16-17 overall and 9-5 in SUNYAC play, while Plattsburgh is 14-15 overall and 6-6 in the league. Cortland is currently in second place in the SUNYAC with 18 points (two points per win), with Buffalo State and Oneonta each at 16 points but having played two less games (8-4 each). Oswego also has 16 points (8-6 record). Cortland closes the regular season with doubleheaders this weekend at Buffalo State and Fredonia. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Plattsburgh 5, Cortland 1

Pitkin evened her season record at 6-6 after allowing three hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) started for Cortland and allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings. She fanned three and walked two.

Felicia Torres gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the second, and the lead grew to 2-0 in the fifth on Dominique Zummo's two-out infield single with runners on first and third.

Cortland broke up Pitkin's no-hit bid in the fourth when Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) beat out a slow grounder to second to lead off the inning. She eventually was stranded at third base. In the sixth, Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) led off with a walk and was bunted to second by Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro). With two outs, Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) walked and Feldman hit an RBI single up the middle. A fly out, however, ended the inning with runners on first and third.

Plattsburgh added three key insurance runs in the seventh on Amanda Tantillo's three-run homer.

Kaitlyn Preiss finished 2-for-2 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch and Kelsey Gage was 2-for-3 for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh catcher Jennifer Groat had a 38-game hitting streak - the second longest in NCAA Division III history - snapped as she went 0-for-3 with a walk. She was on deck in the top of the seventh when Plattsburgh made its final out.

Caputo reached on a pair of walks, Feldman was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Jessica Marsh (Wynantskill/Troy) singled as a pinch hitter in the seventh for Cortland.

Cortland 4, Plattsburgh 3 (9 inn.)

Cortland's winning rally started with O'Gorman's one-out triple to deep right field. Hoyt reached on an error and took second on the play. Feldman then laid down a squeeze bunt to the pitcher that drove home O'Gorman with the decisive run.

Cortland led 3-0 after two innings. The Red Dragons scored in the first on a two-out dropped pop-up in the infield. In the second, Caputo walked with one out, Schoonmaker doubled, and Hoyt hit a two-out, two-run single through the left side.

Plattsburgh scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. Anna Fisher doubled with two outs in the fourth and scored on an Amy Glashoff single. Zummo walked with one out in the fifth and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and Fisher led off with a walk in the sixth, took second on a Glashoff sac bunt and scored on pinch hitter Taylor Smith's two-out RBI single.

The Red Dragons had an opportunity to win in the bottom of the eighth after two-out back-to-back singles by Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) and Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). An apparent walk seemed to load the bases, but the Cortland batter was called out for not actually going to first base before being replaced with a pinch runner.

Van Dorn entered to pitch in the top of the fifth and picked up the win as she went the final five innings. She allowed three hits, two walks and two runs with two strikeouts. Courtney Kane (Bellport) allowed only two hits and one run with a strikeout and three walks over the first four innings.

Plattsburgh starter Rhea Pitkin was charged with four hits, five walks and three runs, two earned, in six and a third innings. Smith threw two innings of relief and allowed three hits and one unearned run with one strikeout.

O'Gorman was 2-for-5 with a triple, Schoonmaker went 1-for-4 with a double and walk, and Hoyt went 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI for Cortland. Glashoff finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Fisher scored two runs for the Cardinals.
