CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland sophomore infielder Dom DeMarco (Watervliet/Shaker) has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) "Elite 20" award winner for the 2017 baseball season.

The award, which was given for the first time this season, goes to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the SUNYAC's 20 championships.

The SUNYAC Elite 20 is modeled after the NCAA Elite 90 program. It recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

The winner must be at least a sophomore academically and in their second year of eligibility at their current institution. Cortland was one of four teams that qualified for the 2017 SUNYAC tournament in Oswego. The tournament, however, was canceled due to the weather, and DeMarco was recognized instead prior to the Cortland-Plattsburgh SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse title game in Cortland May 6.

DeMarco is an exercise science major at Cortland. He had an overall GPA of 3.76 entering the spring semester.
