Cortland Sports Information Department
SUNY Cortland baseball head coach Joe Brown has been selected as the "Coach of the Decade" and former pitching standout Seth Lamando has been chosen to the website's All-Decade Team covering the period from 2010-19.
Over the 10-season span, Brown led Cortland to a combined 386-96-3 record for the highest win total and winning percentage (.799) of any Division III coach. The Red Dragons won at least 34 games each season, including 40 or more victories four times, and made 10 NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Cortland won the national title in 2015, finished second in 2010 and made three other World Series showings. Cortland placed in the top 10 nationally in nine of the 10 years during the decade.
Brown was selected as the D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III National Coach of the Year in 2015. He was also chosen as the D3baseball.com New York Region Coach of the Year four times (2014, 2015, 2018, 2019) and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Coach of the Year three times (2015, 2016, 2019).
An honorable mention all-decade selection, Lamando was primarily a starting pitcher for the Red Dragons in 2015 and 2016 after transferring from Division I Coastal Carolina University. In his two seasons at Cortland, Lamando posted a 16-0 record in 22 appearances, 20 as a starter, with a school-record 0.87 career ERA. In 134 and two thirds innings, Lamando allowed only 90 hits and 22 walks and struck out 147 batters.
During his senior year in 2016, Lamando was named the D3baseball.com National Pitcher of the Year as well as earning top pitching honors on the regional, ECAC and SUNYAC levels. He finished 10-0 – the best perfect season ever by a Cortland pitcher – with a 0.72 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 88 innings. He capped the season with a 1-0 shutout of Emory University in the opening game of the 2016 NCAA Division III World Series. Lamando was named to the World Series, NCAA Regional and SUNYAC all-tournament teams that season, as well as the World Series and SUNYAC all-tournament squads in 2015.
Lamando also saw limited time as an infielder and designated hitter during his Cortland career. He batted .344 (11-for-32) with two homers, four doubles and 15 RBI over two seasons.
A native of Hopewell Junction, Lamando served as an assistant coach for the Red Dragons in 2017 and earned his bachelor's degree in physical education in January 2019.
