CORTLAND, NY - The State Universiy of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is pleased to announce its annual men's lacrosse individual awards, as well as its 2017 All-Conference Team selections. Voted on by conference coaches, the SUNYAC recognizes the Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Paul Rose Coach of the Year.
Plattsburgh's Ryan Hubbard has been awarded the 2017 SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year. The attackman from Aquebogue, led the conference overall statistically with 47 Goals on the season, including fourth in Points (63), and 10th in Assists (16). No stranger to performing under pressure, the senior had several six point games in regular season play against eventual SUNYAC Tournament teams including against Brockport (4g, 2a) and Geneseo (3g, 3a). During conference championships (vs. Brockport; vs. Cortland), Hubbard recorded five Goals and 3 Assists and helped lead the Cardinals to their first ever SUNYAC title in program history. For his efforts, Hubbard was named Tournament MVP and selected to the All-Tournament Team. Additionally, Hubbard has also been announced to the 2017 SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse First Team All-Conference Team; this is his second consecutive year being named to First Team All-Conference.
Brockport's Colin Blind has been voted by the coaches as the 2017 SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year. Prior to the season, the Webster Thomas product was selected to the Division III Pre-Season All American team by Inside Lacrosse. The defenseman, racked up an impressive senior campaign ranking 5th overall in Caused Turnovers (24) and 4th in conference play with 10 CT's; including being 19th overall in Ground Balls (38) and a conference 17th in GB's (15). At the conclusion of the season, Blind overall ranked second in CT's and fourth in Ground Balls for the Golden Eagles. For the second consecutive year, Blind has been named to the SUNYAC First Team All-Conference team for his standout efforts.
After a spectacular inaugural season, Oswego's Tim Schof has been awarded the 2017 SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year. The Montgomery native made a strong impact on his first season with the SUNYAC, ranking second in Assists (13) and ninth in Points (15) with conference play. Overall, the freshman tallied 31 Points (14th) on the season, with a compiled 19 Assists (6th). At the conclusion of the season, the young Laker ranked second on the team in Points (31), fourth in Goals (12), first in Assists (19), and fourth in Shots on Goal (41). The midfielder contributed in almost every single game he stepped on the field, with his best performance coming against the Cortland Red Dragons (L, 10-11 OT) where Shof tallied 5 Assists in the game.
Cortland Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Steve Beville has been voted as the 2017 SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Paul Rose Coach of the Year. Under the helm of Head Coach Beville, the Red Dragons ended the regular season 15-1 with a perfect conference record (6-0) and the top-seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. Beville's team led in several overall statistical categories including Goals (229), Assists (133), Shots on Goal (464), and had a 0.830 Clear Percentage. Additionally, the Red Dragons went a perfect 3-0 in all overtime games on the season; most notably against out-of-conference rival Ithaca on March 29th. Currently ranked No. 4/5, the Cortland Red Dragons look poised to make a another deep run in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. This is Beville's 11th NCAA appearance with the Red Dragons since arriving in 2006. Head Coach Beville has eight 2017 First Team All-Conference players, one Second Team All-Conference selection, and one Honorable Mention All-Conference Team selection. This is Beville's fifth overall Coach of the Year honors with the Red Dragons.
Paul Rose coached the Geneseo men's lacrosse team for 10 seasons from 1971-80, compiling a record of 83-44 and leading the team to the ECAC Upstate Championship in 1974 and 1975. He went on to coach at Division I Colgate and at SUNY-Morrisville. Rose was inducted into the Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and remained active in Geneseo's Men's Lacrosse Alumni activities. The Cortland ('67) Hall of Fame member passed away on March 27, 2010.
