CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) shares a glimpse into A Day in the Life of Cortland's men's cross country runner Richard Samuels. Samuels enters his senior year with the Red Dragons majoring in physical education.
What time do you typically wake up?
Before 9 a.m.
What is one thing that you do (nearly) every day that keeps you on track for competition?
Eating enough food. I was very skinny in high school and I'm still pretty skinny now, but I'm much bigger in comparison and put on a lot more weight/muscle. I'm able to handle the workload in practice much better than I could freshman year.
What motivates you (to be the best in your sport)?
There's honestly no better feeling than a personal best or breaking a school/conference record. I also just like to win especially if it's a relay where others depend on my performance.
How do you stay connected with your teammates?
Group chats. We talk about everything in there.
What is your top lunch choice?
A chicken sandwich specifically from Domenico's pizzeria in my hometown.
What time is practice?
It used to be at 4 p.m., but now it varies because of COVID-19. Tuesday's are at 12 p.m., but every other day varies on schedule now. COVID-19 has had a big impact on all of us. A lot of running we have to do on our own outside of our small team practices.
What class are you looking forward to or/enjoy most this semester?
I'm taking my final GE and the class is called "Will the World Provide" which my former teammates have told me was a very enjoyable class.
What helps you stay focused each day?
Talking to (Coach) Patrick about the future and the steps I've got to take in order to get there. Talking to my teammates about our hopeful indoor and outdoor seasons keeps me excited even though it's only September.
Favorite late night snack?
Nacho Cheese Doritos
How many hours a night do you typically sleep?
Between 7 and 8 hours
