New Paltz wins SUNYAC women's basketball championship

GENESEO, N.Y. – New Paltz won its second straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball title, Saturday after upsetting undefeated Geneseo, 58-57. With the win, the Hawks earned an automatic bid into the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament.

New Paltz's Lindsay Bettke was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP after scoring 18 points in the championship game. Katie Durand had a team-high 16 points for the Knights and was selected to the All-Tournament team.

Cortland's Alaina Lynch was recognized as inaugural award winner of the SUNYAC Elite 20 for the women's basketball championship. The award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
