Lakers Fall To Scranton In NCAA Opening Round

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Oswego State men's basketball team was stunned, dropping an 82-77 contest to Scranton University in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament on Friday night on the campus of Williams College. Oswego finishes its season at 22-7, while Scranton moves to 22-6 and advances to the Round of 32 on Saturday night.

Oswego began the contest executing a near perfect game plan, grabbing an early lead and riding the momentum through the opening half of play. Brian Sortino (10), Keith Tyson (11) and Jamir Ferebee (10) shot a strong 13-for-23 from the field in the half, scoring 31 of the team's 35 points.

With just 2.2 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, Sortino brought the ball inside the opponent's 3-point line. The Fairport, N.Y. native jab stepped, popped back behind the arc and nailed the long ball to give the Lakers a 35-22 lead at the break.

On the glass and in the paint, Mykelle Krecko led the way with 11 in the first half and 17 overall. The senior center bodied up the Scranton big men, not allowing an easy boards or shots and forcing several fouls.

Opening the second half, the Lakers continued to feel the rhythm and extended the lead to 19 at the 18:02 mark. As Scranton fought back into the game, the Lakers did not make it easy and continued to limit scoring in the paint. They forced the opponent to make the outside shot.

Sortino added 17 points in the second period and overtime, while Tyson added six to reach a game total of 17. Ian Schupp finished with 12 points on the evening, while Ferebee scored 13.

As the clock ticked under 2:20 left in regulation, Scranton snagged its first lead of the contest with a 3-pointer from the right elbow. After extending its lead to three on the following play, Sortino got to the free-throw line and knocked down one. Upon transitioning to defense, the senior guard read the play perfectly, stepped in front of the pass, picked it off and brought it to the hoop for an easy layup.

In overtime, both teams went back and forth for the first couple of minutes. Shortly after, Scranton got a free-throw line jumper to go and carried the lead to the finish.

Oswego outrebounded Scranton 20-12 in the opening half and shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the field. The Lakers used this advantage to score 20 second chance points in the contest.
