SUNYAC Releases 2019 Women's Soccer Yearly Awards

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) releases its 2019 women's soccer Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, and the SUNYAC All-Conference teams as voted on by the conference coaches.


Offensive Player of the Year: Lexi Dean, Potsdam

  Potsdam midfielder Lexi Dean was an offensive standout this season. The junior had 14 goals, eight assists, totaling 36 points for the 2019 season. Dean was No. 2 in the conference in overall points. Those numbers helped Potsdam earn the fifth seed after regular season play to advance to the first round of the SUNYAC tournament and finish 8-9-1 overall. The Schenectady native has scored 29 goals, 16 assits while accumulating 74 points total for her career thus far.

 

 


 Defensive Player of the Year: Taylor Clar, Geneseo

Geneseo senior Taylor Clar was an outstanding on defensive helping the Knights hold their opponents to just a .60 goals against average and recorded 10 shutouts. She also scored a penalty kick and two game winning goals for her final season. Clar was a major part of the Knights finishing the regular season as the No. 1 seed in the conference. Geneseo finished second in the conference championship after a tough loss to Cortland in overtime, 1-0.  

   


 Rookie of the Year: Kiley Longin, Brockport 

  Longin had a very impressive first year and was a key factor in Brockport's regular season finish as the third seed going into this year's SUNYAC tournament. She netted 15 goals and seven assists totaling 37 points during her rookie year. Longin was the leading scorer for her team and also ranked No. 1 in the conference for points, establishing herself as a significant offensive presence in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles advanced to the semifinals, but lost to this year's SUNYAC Champions, Cortland.

 

  


Coach of the Year: Heidi Axtell, Cortland

  Heidi Axtell led her team to their ninth overall conference title and the second during her 16 seasons as the head coach of the Cortland women's soccer program. She has a career record of 162-108-40 and is second all-time in wins at Cortland. Cortland finished the regular season ranked No. 2 with a conference record of 7-0-2. The Red Dragons will travel to TCNJ to play Tufts in the first round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament Saturday.
