SUNYAC announces annual awards for women's cross country

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has determined the winners of its yearly awards for women's cross country. These awards include Runner of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, voted on by the coaches.

Runner of the Year: Sara Rosenzweig,
Merrick/Bellmore JFK, Geneseo

Sara Rosenzweigcloses out her decorated cross country career by receiving the Runner of the Year award. This year, she placed in the top-ten in every regular-season meet, including two second-place finishes.  Rosenzweig then placed first in the SUNYAC women's cross country championship, leading Geneseo to their sixth straight conference title. Her performance also placed her on the first team SUNYAC all-conference. Rosenzweig continued her success at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals, placing ninth overall and leading Geneseo to their second straight women's championship.  She closed out her season in impressive fashion by finishing twenty-eighth and earning All-America status at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships and leading her team to a third-place finish nationally.  

Rookie of the Year: Emily Cavanagh, Warwick/Warwick Valley, New Paltz

Emily Cavanagh had a very strong 2016 season, leading to her being awarded Rookie of the Year. Cavanagh had four top-ten finishes this year, including a third-place finish at the Bill Fritz invitational. In the SUNYAC championship, Cavanagh finished 15th to earn a spot on the All-Conference third team. She went on to compete in the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship, placing 13th and receiving All-Region honors.  

 

 

 

 

Coach of the Year: Dan Moore, Geneseo

Dan Moore, coming off of an outstanding 2016 season in both men's and women's competition, wins his second SUNYAC Coach of the Year award in his first two years of coaching the Knights. Coach Moore guided both his men and women to a SUNYAC championship and NCAA Atlantic Regional title this season. The Regional wins were capped by Moore being named the NCAA Atlantic Regional Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.  His teams were consistently ranked in the top-5 nationally, with both teams reaching No. 1 during the fall. At the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Moore's men's team placed second overall and his women's team placed third.  Moore was also awarded SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
