Pioneers Drop Non-Conference Matchups

Canton, NY – Alfred State's win streak comes to an end as they drop both games of the doubleheader. The Pioneers fall to 7-6 on the year as they dropped the first match against SUNY Canton 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-10, 15-17), then fell to Oswego 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-23).

Racquel Gerstenberger led the way with 15 kills and eight aces, while Alayna Tomlinson added 13 kills and eight digs. Nayomie Ferrer Santiago tallied a double-double with 37 assists and 14 digs. Caley Larsen led the team in digs with 15.

The Roos took the first set and the Pioneers answered in the second set. ASC found themselves trailing 9-6 before Gabriella Thurmond notched a kill to spark a 3-0 run to tie the set. On that run, Becca Brown had an ace and Santiago added a kill. A few plays later, Riley Wulff notched a kill, then back-to-back aces to take a 12-11 lead. Wulff added another ace following a Gerstenberger kill for a 14-11 lead. From there the Pioneers would hold off Canton with multiple 3-0 and 2-0 runs to tie the set score at 1-1.

Canton responded to take set three before ASC took set four to force a fifth set. The Pioneers opened set four on an 8-2 run and never looked back. A few plays later, Alfred went on an 8-1 run to take a 20-8 lead. After two Canton points, Gerstenberger tallied three aces and Ferrer notched a kill to take the set.

Canton went on to take a hard fought fifth set.

vs Oswego

Ferrer tallied another double-double as she put in 25 assists and 10 digs. Gerstenberger came away with eight kills and seven digs, while Tomlinson added six kills and eight digs. Larson led the backline tallying 15 digs.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start in set one, starting with a 5-1 run. Oswego would fight back to tie the set at 21-21. From there, they went on a 4-0 run to take the set.

The Lakers carried that momentum into set two and three to get the win.
