Volleyball sweeps on day one at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. - In the first day of the Elmhurst Volleyball Invitational the Beavers came out clicking on all cylinders to start. The Beavers took the first set over Benedictine, 25-16. Bluffton kept the pace going taking set two (25-19) and the clincher (25-21).

Pacing the Beavers with 12 kills in their match-up with Benedictine was MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland) and she was closely followed by teammates Lauren Weisgarber and Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) who pounded 10 and seven kills, respectively. Erin Weisgarber dished out 24 assists and was only topped defensively by libero Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) who had 14 digs. Junior Becca Tourney (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) led the team with three aces. Erin Weisgarber and Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) both picked up 10 digs.

Bluffton had a short break and returned to face SUNY-New Paltz in the final match of the night. The Beavers came out swinging and won three straight: 25-23, 25-16, and 25-20. Setting the pace for the victors was freshman setter Erin Weisgarber with 29 assists, while Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North), who hit a sweltering .471, and MacKenzie McFarlin piled up nine kills apiece. Lauren Weisgarber chipped in with eight kills. Sydney Mohler picked up 22 digs and fired two aces.

The Beavers will be back in action on Saturday facing a pair of national powers in Wisconsin-Whitewater at 11 a.m. and host Elmhurst College at 1 p.m.
