Tartans Advance in NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 Win Over Cortland

(BALTIMORE, Md.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team opened the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 win against SUNY Cortland on Thursday at Johns Hopkins University. The victory moves the Tartans record to 20-11 while the Red Dragons ended their season at 26-6.

  • The set scores were 25-13, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-19.
  • Graduate student Laura Reichard led the Tartans attack with 12 digs while junior Bella Woodard finished with 10, hitting .409. Junior Julianna McFarland finished with nine kills.
  • Sophomore Neha Tummala recorded 42 assists and led the team with four service aces.
  • At the net the Tartans recorded 24 block assists. McFarland led with a career-best seven block assist. Tummala and sophomore Elizabeth Phillips both also had a career-high with five block assists apiece.
  • Senior Abby Chen led a trio of Tartans with double digit digs with 21. Reichard had 13 and sophomore Zoe Gavros finished with 10 digs.

Notes

  • The Tartans advance to the second round of the tournament for the fifth time in program history and first since 2022.
  • The Tartans 24 block assists was a season high.
