Softball Travels to Clermont for a Shortened Spring Trip; Seniors leave their mark

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 24, 2020) – The Western New England University softball team traveled down to Florida to start their season. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Golden Bears' trip was cut short to safely return home.

Western New England competed at The Spring Games down in Clermont, Florida. During their trip, the Golden Bears played in six games over the course of three days, compiling a record of 3-3.

Heidelberg 6, Western New England 2 (3/13)

Freshman Lexie Hemstock (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Jamie Cookingham (Warner, N.H.) both went 3-4 at the plate. Hemstock had one while Cookingham had one run batted in. Sophomore Dina DiBlasio (Norwalk, Conn.) went 2-4 at the plate and had the other run batted in.

Western New England 5, Husson 2 (3/13)

Freshman Kailey Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) went 2-4 at the plate for the Golden Bears with one double and one run batted in. Cookingham went 2-3 at the plate and scored one run while also having another run batted in. Senior Sydney Pounds (Milford, Mass.) and DiBlasio also had RBI's in the game.

Senior Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and two runs. 

Western New England 3, Ursinus 2 (3/14)

Cookingham and DiBlasio both went 2-3 at the plate. Cookingham had one double with one run and one run batted in, while DiBlasio had a double and two runs batted in. Junior Allie Buzzeo (Stamford, Conn.) hit a double for the Golden Bears. 

Kistner picked up her second win in two days after throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts. 

Wooster 10, Western New England 3 (3/14) 

Kistner went 3-3 for the Golden Bears. Freshman Amaya George (Wynantskill, N.Y.) had a double in her one at-bat, scoring later in the inning. Buzzeo, DiBlasio, and junior Madison Murabito (Liverpool, N.Y.) each had one run batted in for Western New England.

Geneseo 10, Western New England 1 (3/15)

Hemstock went 3-4 with a double for the Golden Bears.

Western New England 11, Mount Mary 2 (3/15)

Kistner and Carrano both went 3-4 at the plate. Kistner hit a double and got one run batted in along with three runs, while Carrano had two runs batted in and scored one run.

Senior Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.), senior Carlie Moss (Delmar, N.Y.), junior Emily Cooney (Berlin, Conn.), and Pounds each had two hits for the Golden Bears. Uliase, Murabito, and Moss also each had two runs batted in.

Uliase grabbed the win after throwing four strikeouts over five innings of work.

 

Top Performers 

Jamie Cookingham batted .471 in five games for the Golden Bears, going 8-17 at the plate with one double, two runs, and three runs batted in.

Aimee Kistner had seven hits, including one double and run batted in, while scoring six runs. On the mound, Kistner collected two wins in three appearances, throwing 10 strikeouts and allowing 16 hits. In the two wins, Kistner threw a complete game.

Lexie Hemstock led the team in hits with nine. Hemstock batted .429 (9-21) with one double and scored six runs, and had a slugging percentage of .476.

Kailey Carrano tied for second on the team in hits with eight. Carrano batted .364 (8-22) with a slugging percentage of .409. She hit one double with three runs batted in and scored one run.

Dina DiBlasio led the team in runs batted in with five. DiBlasio had a .429 batting percentage with a slugging percentage of .500. She had six hits in total with one double.
