Buffalo State Wins Men's Basketball Championship

Bracket

Second-seeded Buffalo State (21-6) took control in the second half, running away from fourth-seeded Brockport (15-13) in a 67-50 win in the SUNYAC Championship game this afternoon at Oswego's Max Ziel Gymnasium. The championship is the league-best 18th for the Bengals and first since 2003.

The win earns the Bengals an automatic berth in NCAA Tournament and pushed the team's winning streak to 11 games.

Five Bengals scored in double-figures, led by senior Glenroy Carr who posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Mitchell added 12 points and 12 boards. Chris Cartwright also netted 12 point, Jake Simmons had 11 points and four steals, and Norman Simmons scored 10 points.

Freshman Jon Ivyled the Golden Eagles with 16 points, but the Golden Eagles made just 31 percent of its shots against Buffalo State. Junior Gerald Williams added 11 points for Brockport. Green, who scored a game-high 22 points in Brockport's semifinal win over top-seeded Oswego, scored just two first-half points, and picked up his fourth foul with 11 minutes left on Saturday. He finished with 11 rebounds, 6 points and four blocked shots.

Buffalo State claimed victory despite its lowest offensive output of the season. Brockport slowed the pace in the first half and hit a desperation 3-pointer off the glass at the buzzer to head into the intermission trailing just 23-22. The Golden Eagles led briefly in the second stanza before Buffalo State took the lead for good with 16 minutes remaining and never looked back. The Bengals used a 17-4 run to pull away and cruised to the victory.

The Bengals dominated Brockport inside, outrebounding the Golden Eagles 42-33, and posted a 38-24 scoring advantage in the paint. Buffalo State shot 45-percent from the field, compared to just 31-percent shooting by Brockport.

Buffalo State will learn its NCAA tournament first round opponent and destination during the selection show on Monday at 1 p.m. The show will stream live on www.ncaa.com
