Red Dragons Advance to NCAA Div. III Second Round on Penalty Kicks

CLEVELAND, OHIO – Junior Silke Ohrem (Cologne, Germany/Gymnasium Frechen) scored in the eighth round of penalty kicks and graduate student goalie Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) stopped the last five penalty kicks she faced as the Cortland women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament by virtue of winning a penalty-kick shootout, 4-3, against Eastern University Saturday afternoon at Case Westeern Reserve after the teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie.

Monnier made four saves thoughout regulation and the two 10-minute overtime sessions to post her ninth shutout of the season, but no save was bigger than her final denial of Eastern's eighth penalty kick to send the Red Dragons (12-5-3) into the second round. Junior Alysia Goodman (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) stopped eight shots in 110:00 minutes of play for the Eagles (13-5-3) and turned aside 4-of-8 Cortland shootout kicks.

In a game where scoring chances were rare, Eastern had the best opportunity in regulation but Monnier made a leaping save on junior Kelsey Doutrich's (York Springs, PA/Bermudian Springs) bid in the 19th minute. Cortland nearly earned the win in the first overtime. Sophomore Kelly Knight (RochesterGreece Olympia) took a shot in the 94th minute that Goodman saved. The rebound bounced clear to Cortland senior Jackie De Luise (Schenectady/Guilderland), who sent an open look wide left of the goal. The only shot of the second half came on a header from Eastern freshman Emily Roquemore (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) that was denied by a Cortland defender with 34 seconds remaining.

In the mandatory five-player shootout, the Eagles made their first three kicks, while the Red Dragons converted 2-of-3. Cortland, which shot first, made its fourth attempt, and Monnier denied Eastern's fourth attempt. All even at 3-3 with one shooter remaining, Goodman saved senior Kelly Wanser's (East Northport/Northport) attempt giving the Eagles a chance to advance. Monnier, however, stopped senior Carly Inch's (McAllisterville, PA/East Juniata) try to send the shootout into sudden victory.

Goodman turned aside sophomore Matison William's (Washingtonville) shot, and the Eagles had a second chance to move on with a goal. Monnier denied the winning bid of sophomore Michelle Brown (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and the shootout went to a seventh round. Both Cortland senior Jennifer Cadolino (Massapequa) and Eastern senior Katie Ruth (Chalfont, PA/Lancasteer Mennonite) were denied, setting up Ohrem to clinch the advancement. After Ohrem tallied Cortland's fourth goal of the shootout, Monnier turned away sophomore McKenzi Herbster's (Middleburg, PA/Midd-West) attempt for her fifth consecutive save.

Cortland advanced to face the winner of host Case Western Reserve and Lebanon Valley College Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
