Cortland's DiCapua Recipient of Cahill Award

Cortland senior Stephanie DiCapua (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Peter J. Cahill Award as voted on by the conference coaches. The award, presented to the SUNYAC's Most Valuable Player in women's tennis, was named to honor the commitment and success of Cahill a former Cortland tennis coach.

Cahill taught and coached at SUNY Cortland for 30 years until his retirement in 2002. In 1998 he became the Women's Tennis Coach and won the next five of seven SUNYAC Championships while posting an impressive 59-29 record. He was selected the Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2005 before he passed away in 2006.

In the word of head coach Tom Spanbauer, “Stephanie embodies what the award is all about. She is a role model tennis player who demonstrates great effort and sportsmanship no matter what the situation is.”

DiCapua competed at fourth singles and first doubles with her partner Alyssa Tretter. She finished the fall season with a perfect 11-0 record in singles play including a 7-0 mark against conference opponents. In doubles action, the duo posted a 6-6 record. DiCapua led the Red Dragons to a third place finish at the recent SUNYAC Championship.

She earned all-conference honors for the third time in her career, picking up first team accolades at fourth singles. She previously earned second team honors in 2008 and 2009.

DiCapua is the first Cortland player to earn the award since its inception in 2007.
