2014 SUNYAC volleyball annual honors announced

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its Women's Volleyball All-Conference Teams and individual awards as voted on by the conference coaches. New Paltz's Becca Borquist and Maddie Zwickl took home the Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year honors respectively. It was a New Paltz clean sweep, as the Coach of the Year award went to the Hawks Head Coach, Matt Giufre.

New Paltz's Becca Borquist took home the SUNYAC Player of the Year honors. The junior from Rhinebeck, NY, helped lead the Hawks to their second SUNYAC Championship in program history, while being named SUNYAC Tournament MVP. Borquist notched 17 kills and 16 digs in the championship match vs. Fredonia. She has tallied 518 points, leading all of SUNYAC with 449 kills and 3.74 kills per set.  The secondary education major was also selected for the second consecutive year to the SUNYAC Women's Volleyball All-Conference First Team.

Maddie Zwickl took the Rookie of the Year award. The Warwick Valley alum dished out up 1163 assists (ranks 2nd in SUNYAC) in 127 sets and is averaging 9.16 assists per set (ranks 2nd in SUNYAC) as the Hawks head into the NCAA Division III Tournament. In the SUNYAC tournament championship match vs. Fredonia, Zwickl had 37 assists. She also ranks sixth in the SUNYAC with 48 service aces. The freshman setter is majoring in communications and was also named to the 2014 SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team.

For the second consecutive year, the SUNYAC Volleyball Coach of the Year went to New Paltz's Matt Giufre. 2014 was his 13th season at the helm of the New Paltz Volleyball program. Giufre has guided New Paltz to a 31-5 record in 2014, a perfect 9-0 regular season conference campaign, and took home its second SUNYAC title (first was in 2009) in program history, beating Fredonia (25-19, 25-16, 25-19). The conference tournament championship has earned the New Paltz program an automatic bid and its third consecutive berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament. Giufre is a 1998 graduate of SUNY Cortland, earning his bachelor's degree in physical education and his master's degree in health education in 2002.
