SUNYAC announces athletes of the week for competition Sept. 22-28

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its athletes of the week for the week of Sept. 22-28. Twelve athletes from six institutions were honored for their performances this week.

MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Cohen Miles-Rath
Geneseo, SR (Cohocton,N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton)

Cohen Miles-Rath finished fifth out of 375 runners to lead Geneseo to second place out of 31 teams at the NCAA Division III Pre-National Meet, hosted by Wilimington (Ohio). Miles-Rath covered the eight-kilometer course in 24:02.62, only placing behind four runners from top-ranked North Central (Ill.). Entering the week ranked No. 27 nationally, the Knights finished ahead of No. 13 Loras, No. 16 NYU and No. 32 Bridgewater (Va.)

FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Cassie Goodman 
Geneseo, SR (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes)

Cassie Goodman finished first out of 321 runners to lead the Knights to first place out of 27 teams at the NCAA Division III Pre-National Meet, hosted by Wilmington (Ohio). Goodman crossed the six-kilometer finish line in 20:54.56, almost 17 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Geneseo, which entered last week ranked No. 7 in the nation, placed all seven runners in the top-20 to compile a team score of 34 points. Mount Union was second with 155.

FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Andrea Day 
Oneonta, SR, F (Greene, NY/Greene)

Andrea Day scored three goals this past Saturday in leading the Red Dragons to a 5-2 victory over Oswego. In the game, she scored the eventual game-winning goal while also reaching 100 career points to become only the 7th player in program history to do so. She currently has 102 career points on 44 goals and 14 assists.

FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mairead Hourihan
Cortland, SO, GK (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland)

Mairead Hourihan posted a 1-0 record with a 0.00 GAA and a 1.000 save percentage in 105:00 minutes last weekend. In a 3-0 win at Oneonta on Friday, Hourihan came off the bench to make two saves in the second half. In a 3-0 victory at New Paltz on Saturday, she turned aside three shots to earn the shutout win. For the season, Hourihan has a 1-0 record with a 1.13 GAA and a .750 save percentage for the 6-2 Red Dragons.

MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Robby Reiser  
Cortland, JR, MF (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills East)

Robby Reiser helped Cortland (6-2-1, 1-0-1 SUNYAC) extend its unbeaten streak to seven games as the Red Dragons went 1-0-1 on the road in SUNYAC play last weekend. In a 2-0 win at New Paltz on Friday, Reiser tallied the game-winning goal in the 79th minute as the Red Dragons posted a school-record sixth consecutive shutout. In a 2-2 double-overtime tie at nationally third-ranked Oneonta on Saturday, Reiser scored the game-tying goal in the 60th minute. Oneonta entered the game having surrendered just one goal in its eight previous contests. For the season, Reiser leads Cortland with four goals and nine points.

MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nick Davies 
Potsdam, SO, GK (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas)

Nick Davies made four saves to shut out defending SUNYAC Champ Plattsburgh, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The win was Potsdam's first over the Cardinals since 2000.

WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sarah Grupp 
Oswego, FR, MF (Charlottesville, Va/Western Albermarle)

Sarah Grupp scored her first collegiate goal on Tuesday, which helped spur a narrowly squandered comeback against Hamilton. She then nabbed the game winning goal against SUNYAC opponent New Paltz on Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK –Renee Walker
Cortland, SO, GK (Coram, NY/Longwood)

Renee Walker posted a 1-0-1 record with a 0.44 GAA, .917 save percentage and one shutout in her first two career starts last weekend. In a 1-1 double overtime tie versus New Paltz on Friday, Walker registered eight saves. Walker followed with three saves in a 1-0 OT victory versus Oneonta on Saturday for her first career shutout as she ran her scoreless streak to 138:17.

TENNIS SINGLES PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brynn Sussman
Oneonta, SR (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury)

Sussman rolled out a 5-1 overall week by recording a 4-1 singles mark and a 1-0 record at first doubles after teaming up with Michelle Spencer for an 8-6 first doubles victory on Sept. 26 during a 6-3 loss at Cortland. She also captured first singles in a sweep – 6-3, 6-3. Sussman unleashed a tremendous run at the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championship held at the HWS Tennis Center in Geneva, N.Y., on Sept. 26-27, posting a 4-1 mark and reaching the finals of the consolation round that was scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28. After falling in her opening-round match by the score of 6-0, 6-1 to Hannah More of William Smith, Sussman surfed through four consecutive consolation-round bouts to reach the finals. She beat Veronika Paikin of New Paltz 8-3 in the first conolation match before dispatching Melanie Frank of RPI 8-2 in the second round. Sussman earned a breather in the quarterfinals after advancing by default vs. Ayaka Yoshiro of Elmira but then doubled up Emily Walsh of Scranton 8-4 in the consolation semifinals.

TENNIS DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK – Meghan Storie, JR (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Sam Malek, SO (Clinton, NY/Clinton)
Brockport

Sam Malek and Meghan Storie authored a 2-0 doubles record during the week, while overall the duo posted a 5-0 combined singles and doubles mark. In a 9-0 win over Oswego on Sept. 23, the Brockport tandem defeated Haley Miller and Jill Travis 8-3 at second doubles. Individually, Malek earned a 6-2, 6-1 fourth singles sweep and Storie claimed a 6-4, 6-3 sixth singles win. On Sept. 26 ay Houghton, Malek and Storie posted a dominating 8-1 second doubles win vs. Hannah Hale and Jennifer Iacucci. Malek took third singles 6-0, 6-0.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK –Liz Roberts 
Cortland, SO, S (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead)

Liz Roberts totaled 106 assists and 36 digs to average 8.8 assists and three digs per set during a 2-1 week for the Red Dragons in SUNYAC play. She also registered six aces and six blocks during the three matches. Roberts had 36 assists and a team-high 16 digs in a four-set win over Potsdam.
