The individual event winners at the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team while the athletes who placed second are recognized on the All-Conference Second Team.
The Most Outstanding Athletes finished in the top 10 at the SUNYAC Championships and were voted on by the conference coaches. Sasha Henry (Mt. Vernon, NY) has been named the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete, Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY) the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete, Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville, NY) the Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete and Joe Fox (West Nyack, NY) the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete.
SUNY Cortland’s Steve Patrick has been named the Women's Coach of the Year, and SUNY Oneonta’s Matt LoPiccolo has been named the Men's Coach of the Year. Henry, Jones, Bernstein, and Patrick are back-to-back winners in their award categories.
Buffalo State's Sasha Henry has been voted the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete by the conference coaches. Sasha Henry is a senior at Buffalo state studying health & wellness. Leading up to the 2013 SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, Henry had the top performance time in the 60m dash and the 2nd top performance time in the 200m dash. Henry took first in both the 60m (7.63) and 200m dash (25.29) at the 2013 SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. She accumulated the most points out of the women's track athletes, with 20. Henry also broke the SUNYAC women's indoor 60m dash meet record with a time of 7.63.
Nicole Jones, from the College at Brockport has been bestowed the award for the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete. Jones was a top performer in the shot put and weight throw during the 2012-2013 regular indoor track and field season. At the 2013 SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Jones won titles in both the shot put (12.90m) and weight throw (16.12m). She tallied 20 points, more than any other field athlete. This season, Jones broke her own school record in the shot put (13.36m) and broke the weight throw record (16.32m). Nicole Jones is a senior at SUNY Brockport majoring in business administration.
Sean Bernstein, a senior at Oneonta is this year's the Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete. Bernstein had the top performance time in both the 60m and 200m dash leading up to the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. At this year's championship, Bernstein nabbed first place finishes in the 60m dash (6.82), 200m dash (21.86), and 4x400m relay (3:23.19). These first place finishes gave Bernstein 22.50 points, which totaled more than any of his track competitors. Bernstein set a new SUNYAC meet record in the 60m dash with a time of 6.82. Last season, Sean Bernstein won the 60m and 200m dash at the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Bernstein went on to earn All-American honors in the 60m dash last winter and won the national championship in the outdoor 200m dash. He is currently studying history at SUNY Oneonta.
An Oneonta Red Dragon, Joe Fox has been awarded the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Fox won the 2013 SUNYAC title for the men's shot put with 15.47m. Although Fox did not have one of the top performance times in the weight throw coming into the SUNYAC championships, he placed third in the event with 16.37m. He tallied 16 points, more than any other field athlete. Fox is sophomore psychology major at Oneonta.
Steve Patrick, SUNY Cortland's head women's indoor track and field coach has been named coach of the year. The 2012-2013 season marks the sixth season Patrick has been head coach at SUNY Cortland.
Patrick's other accomplishments include being named 2008 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Division III Atlantic Region Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). He won that award again as women's coach for the 2011-2012 season. Patrick previously won SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year awards as women's coach for the 2007-2008 & 2011-2012 seasons and men's coach during the 2008-2009 season. Patrick had three men's and three women's SUNYAC indoor track and field titles prior to this season.
For the 2012-2013 season, Steve Patrick had many of his female athletes on the top performance lists coming into the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The SUNY Cortland women's team took first in the indoor track and field championship with 172 points, a 56 point lead from the second place finisher.
SUNY Oneonta's men's indoor track and field coach, Matt LoPiccolo has been voted men's indoor track and field Coach of the Year by conference coaches. LoPiccolo has coached for 13 years at Oneonta. He was head coach for his first six years, then associate coach, and became the head coach again for the 2010-2011 season.
The Oneonta men's indoor track and field team won the SUNYAC indoor championship with 153 points. This is the first time Oneonta has won the SUNYAC indoor track and field championship in either men's or women's indoor track and field, a huge feat for LoPiccolo.
LoPiccolo coached many strong track and field athletes on his team this season. The men's track athlete of the year and men's field athlete of the year are both SUNY Oneonta athletes; Sean Bernstein and Joe Fox.
LoPiccolo’s other achievements include serving on the NCAA Division III Track & Field Executive Committee as the Atlantic Region Representative. He previously won men's Coach of the Year for the 2004-2005 season. He has coached 36 All-Americans, which include three national champions. Sean Bernstein is his most recent national champion, winning the 200m dash in the outdoor championship.
