SUNYAC Announces Women's Basketball Conference Awards

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to recognize and award this seasons Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 women's basketball season. All awards were voted on by the SUNYAC women's basketball conference coaches.

Kathleen Payne (Goshen, NY/Goshen High School) from SUNY Plattsburgh was awarded Player of the Year. Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, NY/Lockport High School) from Fredonia State was named Rookie of the Year, and SUNY Plattsburgh's Cheryl Cole was voted Coach of the Year.

Kathleen Payne from SUNY Plattsburgh was named player of the Year. Payne led the Cardinals to their first-ever SUNYAC Championship Saturday and earned its first-ever berth to the national championship. Payne was Plattsburgh's leading scorer and rebounder as she averaged 19.7 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game.  Payne has broken all of SUNY Plattsburgh's women's basketball scoring records and was SUNYAC Player of the Week twice.  She was also on the DIII News 2013-14 Pre-Season All-American list. Kathleen Payne is a senior and will be graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice.

Alexis Cheatham from Fredonia State was awarded the 2013-14 Rookie of the year. Alexis leads the SUNYAC freshman with 12.3 points per game.  She also has the best three point field goal percentage and leads in three point shots made per game among all freshman.  In addition she was second in assists in the conference with 4.9 assists per game and third in assist/turnover ratio in the conference. She is also third in scoring for the Blue Devils this season.

SUNY Plattsburgh's coach Cheryl Cole was named Coach of the Year this season as she led Plattsburgh to their first-ever SUNYAC Championships and an opportunity to become National Champions. They beat Geneseo for the SUNYAC Championship 57-52. Plattsburgh was the number one team in SUNYAC for scoring, and was second in scoring margin for the conference.  They were also number three in the conference in both offensive and defensive rebounding. This is Cheryl Cole's 17th season as the Head Coach for the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals.
