SUNYAC Announces 2015 Volleyball awards

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces the 2015 Volleyball All-Conference teams and individual awards. Kayla Barber of Brockport and Becca Borquist of New Paltz have earned Co-Player of the Year honors, while Ariel Murawski from Oswego has earned the Rookie of the Year. Steve Pike of Brockport has been named the Coach of the Year. All conference awards are voted on by the conference coaches.

Kayla Barber, Brockport's senior outside hitter led the league with an outstanding 4.40 kills per set in conference play. She has a total of 385 kills overall so far this season. Kayla helped the Golden Eagles to a 9-0 finish in conference play to be the top seed going into the SUNYAC championship tournament. Brockport went on to win its first volleyball crown in 21 years and Barber was named the tournament MVP. The Golden Eagles will play Framingham State in the first round of the NCAA Division III volleyball championship tournament.

Becca Borquist, a senior outside hitter from New Paltz was second in the conference with 3.43 kills per set. She also finished fourth with 0.51 service aces per set. This is the second straight year that Borquist has earned Player of the Year honors. The Hawks finished the regular-season second in the conference with just one loss, 8-1 and went on to play Brockport in the SUNYAC  finals falling, 3-1.  

Oswego freshman Ariel Murawski has been named the Rookie of the Year. During her first year, she finished third with a conference hitting percentage of .323 and sixth in kills per set at 3.03. The Outside Hitter led her team in kills per set and points per set this season. The Lakers finished the regular-season third in the conference, 7-2.

Steve Pike coached the Golden Eagles to an outstanding 33-1 record, Capturing their sixth overall SUNYAC Championship. The last one being recorded in 1994. Pike joined Brockport in 2013 and in the past three seasons turned around a struggling team into a top competitor in the league. This is his second time earning this prestigious award, the first being in 2005 while the head coach at Potsdam.
