Brockport's Jackson and Washington Take Home 18th & 19th at NCAA's in Hammer Throw

Three SUNY Brockport student athletes competed on day three of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.

Brockport's Matthew Jackson placed 18th in his first career hammer throw appearance at NCAA's with a toss of 53.11m. Elijah Washington placed 19th with a throw of 49.60m. Chanyce Powell fouled out of the triple jump and finished outside of the top 19 for Brockport. 

Jackson posted a throw of 53.11m on his first attempt and then fouled on his second and third attempts to take home 18th place in the men's hammer throw.  His PR in the hammer is 56.64m.  Washington fouled on his first hammer throw attempt, posted a throw of 49.60m in his second and then fouled on his third attempt. He entered the meet with a PR of 59.81m.  Powell fouled on all three of her attempts for Brockport in the triple jump. Her PR in the triple jump is 12.10m. 
 
Washington and Jackson were both making their first career nationals appearance.  Washington developed into one of the top hammer throwers in the nation and ranked seventh in the country with a school-record distance of 59.81m. Washington recently won his first SUNYAC title in the hammer throw at the SUNYAC outdoor championships hosted by Brockport.  Jackson ranked 14th nationally with a distance of 56.64m. Jackson won the SUNYAC crown in the hammer throw last Spring.
 
All-American Chanyce Powell was making her fifth career appearance at nationals. She entered this year's NCAA outdoor meet ranked sixth nationally in the triple jump after setting a school-outdoor record with a first-place jump of 12.10 meters at the All Atlantic Track & Field Conference Outdoor Championships last weekend. Powell is a two-time All-American in the long jump for Brockport.  This past indoor season she placed 11th in the triple jump. In March of 2019 she earned All-American honors at indoor nationals in the long jump with a leap of 5.66 meters. In 2018, she placed 13th nationally at outdoor nationals in the long jump. At the 2018 indoor nationals she placed fifth and earned All-American honors in the long jump and she added a 14th place finish in the triple jump.  Over the course of her career, she was a three-time SUNYAC Champion (2018 Indoor Triple Jump, 2020 Indoor Triple Jump, 2018 Outdoor Triple Jump).
