Geneseo wins 2017 SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championship

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Geneseo won its seventh consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's tennis championship crown, Monday at the Binghamton Tennis Center. With the win the Knights earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament in the spring.

Geneseo and New Paltz battled it out for almost four hours in a match that ended 5-3. After doubles play, Geneseo was in the lead 2-1 with a win from first doubles team of Lauren Salzano (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Anika Pornpitaksuk (Queens, N.Y.) and second doubles team of Vanessa Lam-Tran (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Rachel Ollis (Suffern, N.Y.). New Paltz's third doubles duo of Lindsay Haley (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Jenna Grandville (Tappan, N.Y.) won their match to give the Hawks one point going into singles play.

In singles, after two wins from New Paltz and one from Geneseo, the score was tied up at three until the Knights took the next two team points to win the match. Geneseo grabbed wins at second, third and fifth singles from Lam-Tran, Pornpitaksuk and Nina Lurie (Scarsdale, N.Y.) respectively. New Paltz's Emi Lewis (New York City, N.Y.) won fourth singles and Haley won sixth singles.

This is Geneseo's 11th SUNYAC championship title in program history and the third under current head coach Jason Stephens.

Geneseo's Anika Pornpitaksuk was named the 2017 SUNYAC Tournament MVP after going undefeated in all matches completed throughout the tournament. She was 3-0 in doubles play with partner Lauren Salzano and 2-0 in singles play.
