GORHAM, Me. – The second-seeded Oswego State baseball team saw its season come to a close in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to top-seeded host University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon. Oswego's year ends with a 29-14 overall record and a fifth-straight NCAA Championship appearance after earning the conference's automatic berth with its third-consecutive SUNYAC Championship title.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In what proved to be a true pitcher's duel, Nick DeMarco outshined the competition, despite taking the loss. The righty tossed 8.1 innings, using just 93 pitches with an astonishing 77 of those going for strikes. He allowed just three runs – only two of which were earned – on six hits with six strikeouts. Four of DeMarco's strikeouts came on swings while two caught Huskie batters looking.
• With one out and the tying run at third, a sacrifice fly made its way to the outfield. That fly was dropped, allowing the batter – representing the go-ahead run – to move to third base. Oswego went to the pen to relieve DeMarco and a wild pitch to the next batter allowed the runner to score.
• Oswego put the tying run aboard in the bottom of the ninth on a Ryan Weiss single down the right-field line. Justin Troelstra pinch-ran for Weiss but was put out on a 6-3 double play to end the game.
• The Lakers opened the scoring in the sixth frame as Paul Tammaro reached on an error to start the inning and Ryan Enos walked to chase the Southern Maine starter from the game. Both runners moved a base on a balk and a Brandon Nicholson single to center plated Tammaro for the game's first tally.
• Mike Dellicarri followed Nicholson's example with a single of his own, rocketing a ball off the pitcher's leather and into center to push Enos across. Again the runners moved over on a balk so the Huskies elected to walk clean-up hitter Lukas Olsson to load the bases with no outs. After another pitching change, Southern Maine induced a grounder to third for a force out at home before a 5-2-3 double play stopped the Laker momentum.
• The Huskies tried to immediately tie the game to open the seventh, but DeMarco worked around a no-out, runners on the corners situation, allowing just one run to preserve the Laker lead at 2-1.
• Nicholson led Oswego with two hits while Dellicarri, Weiss, Enos and Gruarin each had a base knock.
• Olsson worked two walks while Enos earned one free pass.

The Lakers will return 32 players to its 2020 roster as Oswego looks to continue its string of postseason appearances.
