CORTLAND N.Y. - After getting swept by Cortland in the regular season, the Oswego Lakers won their third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship. On Monday afternoon the Lakers found themsleves facing the top seeded Red Dragons only having to win one game to take home the title. A huge offensive day for Oswego propelled them to an 11-7 victory over Cortland. After winning today it grants an automatic bid for the Lakers into the NCAA Regional round as the Red Dragons will let the committee handle their fate.
The first couple of innings were slow as each pitcher was cruising until Colin BeVard stepped up to the plate with two runners on in the bottom of the third inning and blasted one over the left field fence to make the score 3-0. In the top of the fourth inning Ryan Weiss singled to left field to cut the score to 3-1 but immediately Cortland added another on a single from Wyatt Myers to move the lead back up to 4-1. Trailing Cortland 4-2 in the top of the sixth, Oswego would take the lead and never look back. Rocco Leone doubled down the left field line to plate Chilson and cut the deficit to just one at 4-3. Paul Tammaro came to the plate and on a 1-1 count, notched his first-career home run over the left-field fence to give Oswego a 5-4 advantage.
In the top of the eighth inning Ryan Enos hit a 3-run homerun to give the Lakers some insurance runs late in the game. Oswego was not done yet as Lukas Olsson capitalized on a Cortland miscue, doubling to left center making the lead 9-4. Scott Giordano gave the Red Dragons some life in the bottom of the inning with a 3-run opposite field bomb to cut the lead to 9-7 heading into the last inning. Oswego added two runs back in the ninth on another Weiss single and Leone sac fly. Cortland ended up getting blanked in the bottom of the ninth as Oswego captured the 2019 SUNYAC title.
