AMHERST, Mass. – The Plattsburgh State softball team made short work of Keene State Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 15-0 win at the NCAA Division III Amherst Regional Tournament.
With the win, Plattsburgh (34-9) remains unbeaten in the tournament and will have two opportunities to win the regional title. Keene State (27-11-1) drops into the loser’s bracket and will face the winner of the Amherst/Cortland matchup tomorrow. The last remaining team of those three will face the Cardinals at 2 p.m. The winner of the regional tournament will be one of eight teams to make the trip to the NCAA Division III Softball World Series.
Plattsburgh wasted no time against the Owls as Brittany Marshall reached base with a lead-off single in the bottom of the first. Marshall scored on a groundout by Brianna Clarke to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
A two-run triple by Megan Price and an RBI triple by Marshall gave Plattsburgh a 4-0 lead in the second. The Cardinals broke it wide open in the fourth when Sam Capobianco’s grand slam was part of a five-run third to create a 9-0 cushion.
Keene State could not stop the Cardinal offense, as Plattsburgh piled on six more runs in the fourth.
Capobianco was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored. Price, Dana Mandery and Allison Smiddy each drove in a pair of runs. Marshall, Michelle Iannone and Erin Florkiewicz added two hits apiece. Plattsburgh finished with 12 hits.
Heather Loughran saw her first action of the weekend in the circle for the Cardinals. Loughran allowed seven hits but kept the Owls off the board to earn her 10th win of the year.
Keene State used four pitchers with Emily Albin suffering the loss. Albin surrendered four runs on three hits through 1 and 2/3 innings of work. Sara Stocklinski, Julia Nolan and Samantha Pratt worked in relief for the Owls.
