SUNYAC Places 15 on NFCA All-Region Teams

Fifteen State University of New York Athletic Conference student-athletes were named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Northeast All-Region softball teams. Of the 15 SUNYAC players selected, six were chosen for First Team honors.

SUNY Cortland sophomore outfielder Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) batted .359 with 12 doubles and school single-season records of 17 home runs and 68 runs batted in through 51 games. She posted a .763 slugging percentage and made one error in 27 attempts from outfield (.933%).

Senior Abby Martin (Oswego, NY), a “utility” selection on the All-SUNYAC team, is batting .393 with five homers, three triples, a team-high 18 doubles and 44 RBI in 51 games. In the circle, Martin is 12-4 with a 2.58 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 84 innings.

Junior second baseman Lucia Meola (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) is a first-team selection for the second straight year. She led Cortland with a .396 batting average and also led the squad with 51 runs scored and 24 walks. Her statistics also include 11 doubles, two triples and two home runs.

Plattsburgh junior pitcher Ashley Marshall (Malone, NY) earns her third consecutive NFCA All-Region citation. After being honored as the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, Marshall went on to dominate the NCAA Regional tournament at Amherst College as the Cardinals rolled to a 4-0 finish and earned a place at the Division III College World Series. Marshall continues to set the record for single-season wins, a mark she bested after beating Amherst College for her 24th win of the season. She currently has a 1.41 ERA and has struck out 269 batters.

Senior short stop Kyrstin Lekki (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) represented Buffalo State on the first team. Lekki led the SUNYAC with a .462 batting average, an .846 slugging percentage, and a .556 on-base percentage.  She set a new school record with 21 doubles and led the Bengals with eight home runs and 39 RBIs.  Lekki was a clutch hitter all season, evident by her .524 batting average with runners in scoring position.

Sophomore designated player Sam Trapasso (Garden City, NY) paced Geneseo this season by hitting .413 (43-104) with team bests of 11 doubles, five homers and 27 RBI.

With first team honors, the six players advance to the All-America ballot.  The All-America teams will be announced Thursday evening May 17 at the College World Series Banquet in Salem, Va.
