O'Brien and Westenberg Tabbed SUNYAC Softball Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - New Paltz's Kelsey O'Brien is the SUNYAC Softball Athlete of the Week and Cortland's Kim Westenberg is the Pitcher of the Week.

O'Brien had a productive opening weekend, going 7-for14 hitting in the two spot in the order for the Hawks with a team-high six runs with two RBI, a walk and three extra base hits with one double and a triple. O'Brien got the offense started in a 5-3 win over William Peace, hitting a lead-off single in the top of the third before crossing to score the team's first run of the game. With the game tied in the top of the seventh, O'Brien hit a lead-off double and then was later hit in as the game's go-ahead run to help in the two-run win. She hit 2-for-4 with two runs in the game and against Randolph went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in a 9-1 win. In a 10-1 rout of Oberlin, O'Brien was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI a walk and a double. Defensively, she totaled seven putouts out in left field.

Westenberg earned a win and a save as Cortland opened the season in Florida with two victories. She started and tossed five innings of three-hit shutout ball with nine strikeouts and one walk, and was 1-for-3 at the plate in a 7-1 win over Salem State. Just a couple hours later she entered in the top of the seventh with Cortland leading 1-0 over Montclair State and kept the Red Hawks off the board to preserve the win.
