Pyszczek and Barry Honored with SUNYAC Softball Athlete of the Week Awards

SYRACUSE, NY - The SUNYAC selects Buffalo State's Katie Pyszczek as the Softball Athlete of the Week and Cortland's McKenna Barry as the Pitcher of the Week.

Pyszczek was an offensive star for Buffalo State against four games on Saturday and Sunday to lead the Bengals to a 4-0 weekend. The freshman batted .750 (9-for-12) with two doubles, five runs batted in, and four runs scored as Buffalo State defeated Potsdam and Plattsburgh in SUNYAC doubleheaders. She also recorded at least two hits and drove in at least one run in every game over the weekend, and had a perfect fielding percentage behind the plate in all four games. Returning to the lineup on Saturday after missing midweek games due to injury, Pyszczek went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored in a 4-2 win. She then went 2-for-2 with two runs driven in during the second game of the day, an 8-0 win. On Sunday afternoon, Pyszczek once again dominated, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, including driving in the game-winning run to help Buffalo State walk off game one, 6-5 in eight innings. She then delivered her signature performance of the weekend in the second game, going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored as Buffalo State won 8-2.

Barry was the winning pitcher for Cortland in both games of a doubleheader at Oneonta last Monday. She allowed just one earned run, nine hits and one walk with one strikeout over 12 innings. Barry started the opener and tossed a complete-game five-hitter with two runs, one earned, in a 4-2 win. She entered in relief in the second game and tossed five shutout innings with four hits allowed, and also hit a game-tying homer, in an 8-3 victory.
