Samantha Szkotak selected as Women's Basketball Player of the Week

FREDONIA, N.Y.—The State University of New York Athletic Conference has selected Oneonta State senior Samantha Szkotak as its women’s basketball Player of the Week.

Szkotak led the Red Dragons to a pair of wins over the weekend against Oswego and SUNY Cortland.  She registered 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-40 win versus Oswego on Friday night.  She followed that performance with a 19-point effort in helping to lead Oneonta to a 72-62 win against rival Cortland on Saturday.

Overall, Szkotak averaged 19.5 points and nine rebounds for the two games while shooting 54 percent (15-28) from the field.  She hit 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

Szkotak, who eclipsed 1,000 collegiate points back in January, currently sits at 1,178 career points, which is fourth all time in the history of the women’s program.

Oneonta state is currently 16-6 overall and on top of the SUNYAC standings with its 14-2 record.  The Red Dragons were also ranked No. 5 in the first NCAA East Region poll released last Wednesday.

The women will finish the regular season this week, beginning with a game at SUNY Potsdam Tuesday night before finishing at home Friday versus New Paltz.  Both contests are scheduled for a 6pm tipoff.

Oneonta will host a first round SUNYAC tournament game next Tuesday night beginning at 7pm.  Their opponent won’t be known until the conference announces the pairings for this year’s tournament on Sunday.
