The 2011-2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Basketball Playoff field has been set, with eight teams battling for a chance to win the postseason conference championship and earn the SUNYAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The playoffs begin Tuesday February 21, with the top four seeds hosting the quarterfinals.

The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals and final, which are to run Friday through Saturday, Feb. 24-25. The two semifinal winners will meet Saturday in the championship game.

Before the action begins, here are the top 25 quick facts you should know about the conference tournament.

1. The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) will employ an eight team tournament format (non-divisional) for the 14th straight year. From the 1983-84 season to 1997-98 season divisional play was used to determine the top seeds.
*For the purpose of the countdown quick facts 1-16 will be based on the current tournament format years 1999-2012.
 
2. Seven of the eight teams that qualified for the 2011 SUNYAC Tournament return again this season. Brockport has been replaced by Fredonia.
 
3. Cortland, Geneseo and Oneonta have qualified for the SUNYAC tournament each year.

4. Only four SUNYAC Tournaments - in 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2011 - have gone exactly according to seeding.
 
5. This is the second time since 1999 that Buffalo State will serve as the number one seed. Previous year was 2002, when Buffalo State won the SUNYAC title.

6. Since the league scrapped a divisional format in 1998-99, the top four seeds are all 11-1 in their opening game of the SUNYAC Tournament. The #1 seed lost in the quarterfinals in 2003, #2 lost in 2009, #3 lost in 2006 and #4 lost in 2002.
 
 

7. This is the first year that Cortland has not been a top four seed in the non-divisional tournament format.
 
8. New Paltz earns a top four seed for the sixth straight year, all under Head Coach Jamie Seward. The Hawks advanced to the tournament three times prior to Seward’s arrival (2001 – 7th, 2004 – 7th, 2006 – 8th).
 

9. Oneonta has been in the top four eleven of possible 14 times.
 

10. Three of the top four seeds have advanced to the semifinals each year, with all four advancing nine times. The number 5, 6, 7, and 8 seeds have only advanced to the semifinals once. (No. 5 – 2002; No.6 – 2006; No. 7 – 2009; No. 8 – 2003).
 

11. A top four seed has won the championship title each year. Brockport was the lowest seed (#4) to win the title in 2009.

12. The #1 seed has advanced to the finals 11 times in the past 13 years, winning the championship nine times including the last two years.
 
13. The No. 2 seed has won the championship twice in seven trips to the finals, No. 3 is 1-4 in the finals and No. 4 seed is 1-2 in the championship.
 
 

14. The only lower seed to advance to the finals in the current tournament format was No. 7 seed – Potsdam in 2009.

15. Buffalo State last hosted a playoff game in 2003, which is the last time the Bengals advanced to the semifinals, defeating No. 7 Oswego 63-48.  

16. Cortland has advanced to the semifinals each year of the current tournament format. (The last time the Red Dragons didn’t advance was in the 1994-1995 season).

18. Teams winning consecutive SUNYAC titles are Buffalo State, which did it twice (1983-84 to 1987-88 and 1990 and 91), along with Geneseo (1995, 1996), Cortland (1999 and 2000) and Brockport (2008 and 2009).

19. Tuesday’s quarterfinal will mark the third time #1 Buffalo State and #8 Fredonia have met in the playoffs. Buffalo State won the first matchup, 83-63, in 1992, and Fredonia earned a 61-48 win in 2001. The Bengals are 57-15 all-time against Fredonia and swept the regular season series this year. Buffalo State won at home, 80-63 on Jan 9, and claimed a 67-51 win in Fredonia on Feb. 14.

20. #2 New Paltz and #7 Plattsburgh have never met in the SUNYAC postseason but have shared the court 41 times, and the Hawks lead the series 24-17. This year, the Hawks swept the regular-season series, downing the Cardinals 75-61 on Dec. 6 at New Paltz and 79-72 on Feb. 14 at Plattsburgh. The Cardinals' last win over New Paltz came on Jan. 17, 2009, when they prevailed, 72-65, at home.

21. #3 Oneonta and #6 Oswego have met three times in the SUNYAC Playoffs, with the most recent matchup in the 2007 quarterfinals. Oswego won that year for a 2-1 record against the Red Dragons in postseason. The two teams split the 2011-12 regular season with each team winning on home court.

22. #4 Geneseo and #5 Cortland will be meeting for the 13th time in the post-season as the Red Dragons have an 8-4 record in the playoffs against the Knights. The two teams have met twice in the quarterfinals with Cortland winning both times; however the last time the #5 seed defeated #4 was in 2002.

23. The SUNYAC Championship game have historically been tightly contested affairs. Three Champions  have been decided by exactly one point. A total of seven have been decided by five points or less and 18 by ten or fewer points.

24. On the season, the four teams hosting quarterfinal games – Buffalo State (14-0), New Paltz (9-2), Oneonta (9-2) and Geneseo (9-2) - are a combined 41-6 (.872) at home.

25. Geneseo’s 22 straight SUNYAC Tournament appearances from 1991-12 is a league record. Oneonta and Cortland have made 19 and 18 consecutive appearances, respectively.
