Cohen and Smiley Earn WBCA Honorable Mention All-America Recognition

Cortland senior guard Brittany Cohen and Buffalo State sophomore center Bianca Smiley have been chosen as Division III women's basketball honorable mention All-Americans by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). This marks the second All-American honor for Cohen while Smiley is a first time honoree.

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Year each of the last two seasons, Cohen led the Red Dragons with 15.2 points, 5.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She ranks 17th nationally in Division III in assists per game. Cohen led the SUNYAC in assists per game and ranked third in the conference in scoring, second in free throw percentage (79.9 percent) and second in three-point field goals made per game (1.8).

A starter in all 27 games this season, Cohen scored in double figures 23 times and recorded at least four assists in a game on 25 occasions. She scored 25 points and dished out 10 assists in the Red Dragons’ 70-64 overtime win at Geneseo in the SUNYAC tournament quarterfinals.

In her two seasons at Cortland after transferring from Onondaga Community College, Cohen registered 792 points (15.2 per game) and 300 assists (5.8 per game).

Cortland finished the season with a 16-11 record. The Red Dragons advanced to the SUNYAC tournament semifinals for the 17th straight year.

A transfer from Medaille, Smiley was fifth in the SUNYAC in scoring (14.3 ppg) and second in the league in rebounding (8.8 rpg).  She led the Bengals in each category, and also paced the team with 11 double-doubles, and added 48 steals.  Smiley was also selected first team All-SUNYAC.

Smiley helped lead the Bengals to a 25-3 overall record, matching school records for wins in a season and winning percentage (.893).  Buffalo State captured the SUNYAC regular season title, posting a 16-2 mark in conference play, and assembled a 13-game winning streak before its season came to an end with a 50-41 loss to Oneonta in the league title game.
